Using Skype and other web-conferencing tools to support off campus learners

Presenter: Andy Ramsden, Geraldine Jones

Time: 13.15 to 14.05

Note: this session will be delivered via skype. When you register details about how to enrol on skype will be forwarded to you.

Description: Skype is free software that allows you to communicate with other skype users over the internet. It supports both video and audio 2-way communication and is therefore a powerful tool for supporting distance learning and off-campus learners. Just a few examples include:

  • Allowing off campus students to participate in live tutorials / seminars
  • Catch-up chats with PhD supervisors or placement students
  • Live collaboration on shared documents

This seminar will investigate the potential of Skype to support all of these, giving examples of the existing use of Skype at the University, and also suggest other possibilities available at the University.

Session pre-requisties: a Skype username, a stereo headset with mic and webcam might also be useful.
